Galileo Galilei...sounds like a song to me...

Happy thought for today...

'make no small plans for they have no power to stir the soul.'
(Galileo Galilei)

My plans for a geodesic dome which straddles a disused quarry rock face, filled to the brim with tropical plants and blooming waterlillies which float atop a black/jade bottomless quarry lake... definitely stirs my soul (the floating lake house kinda does too).
But that's just the tip of the iceburg, I think I will be the most spectacularly creative billionairre... one day!

New Simply Rouge business card...

This is one I crafted for my stationer company Simply Rouge in the style of some of my new invitations (you can see them in the folio album in Equinox Shop Belfast!).  On the invitations the bevelled plates feature the Bride and Grooms monogram and there are heaps of lush satin ribbon colours to choose from (not to mention oodles of coloured bevels and topping papers).

Scribble zentangle...

This is a cool method for zentangling... you get a pen or marker or pencil in a vibrant colour and just scribble.  Then go around the out line of the scribble picking out all the detail with a contrasting colour.  It works really well for lettering, the more loose and messy your scribble the more interesting the detail.  I used to do this on the front cover of my school books...so much more interesting than anything the teacher was ever saying.

Avoca sweet packaging...

So sweet in more ways than one.  I couldn't resist buying this packet of sweets as they were wrapped up so sweetly. I HAVE to design things which include sweet wrapping!!!  There's something so olde worlde and gifty/exciting about wrapped packages.

I was so excited about these that I did the photo shoot right then and there on the soup-kitchen style tables in Avoca!

Fresh twist on Sticky notes...

Cool fruit shaped sticky notes by D-Bros, a quirky stationery design company.  Check out their website and get Google to translate if you don't happen to be able to read Japanese!

Cactus zentangle...

I luuuuurved cactus plants as a kid.  I always killed them with kindness (they don't like to be watered every day twice a day, fancy that).  I must have had cactus in my subconcious when doing this zentangle...

Fancy business card...

Here's one of the business cards I made for Simply Rouge lately, I changed my logo so it was a good excuse to play with some new cards.

These ones have a deep bevelled edge in crisp white with a shiny silver mirro trim and a pearl white topping printed with jet black ink...mmmm... getting goose bumps just describing it (very American Psycho!)...

Strawberry-Lime business card wallet wrap...

I've been playing heaps lately and making new business cards (mmmm lots of scrummy bevelled edges, letterpress, gocco and thermo printing!)  so I needed a packaging solution to stop my new cards getting trashed as they float about in my handbag.  and this is it...

Ta da!

So now I just have to do a photo shoot and upload the business cards I carry around in this!! Very soon!

Cherry Blossom Boulevard...

I've been playing around with depth of field and where to blurr or not to blurr lately.  Here is the Anadale embankment this Spring, covered in cherry blossom snow...

Changing the depth of field and blurr regions a little...

Meet Hammer Rose!

Hammer Rose is a piperoid I bought her in Helios Fountain a fantastic treasure trove shop in Edinburgh (Grassmarket).  They come as a set of rolled straws that you cut and assemble following some very very cute Japanese instructions.
Piperoids are a Japanese creation and there are a few to choose from, the ones I want most are Mr.Penk and Goriborg...

Sugarpaste sweetpea...

When preparing sugarpaste samples for my cake class I was regularly frustrated by how delicate they were and how hard they are to transport.  So I've started crafting samples from fimo (oven bake polymer clay) and they are soooooooo much stonger...

Here's a stylised sweet pea I played with...

Polymer clay is a bit saggier but with a little bit of fussing you can get it to behave.
OH AND BY THE WAY, JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW...
IT'S NOT EDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Origami lily...

You can google 'origami lily' or look for it on youtube to find heaps of tutorials.  These are pretty easy and would make a fabulous, funky stylised boquet...

Kimono pocket fold experiment...

The basic template for this fold came from 'How to Fold' but I played around with it so much that it barely resembles the original now.  it's basically a double ended kimono fold but I folded one side to be short and then added an obi wrap.  because the format is folded under the obi it kind of bulks it out to keep it securely in place.

I know you can't really get a proper sense of it's construction from this photo but when I turn it into a real invitation for Simply Rouge then all will become clear!

I've been fascinated with this japanese kimono style structure for quite a while now.  I made some bespoke invitations for The Prince's Trust last year which featured a black kimono pocket lined with red peeping trim silk.  I will hoke about for it in all the bags of samples and experiments and put it up here as soon as I find it.

I just love the idea of 'peeping trims' so i doubled up this kimono template with a peeping lining...

I think this peeping tim would be stunning in some beautiful Japanese chiyogami (heres a link to one of the best retail suppliers with the greatest range)
So I did my own amazing hand drawn chiyogami to demonstrate...(ps, that was sarcastic)

Good morning sunshine!

This is my current screen saver, it's very cheery when I turn the computer on after breakfast at 4am!!!
It also has lots of great blurry space to add text if I wanted to jounal with it.

It was taken during a camera club outing at Crawfordsburn beach.  I love how friendly the camera club guys are and how patient they are with me picking their brains for hours at a time!

Logo Development

I'm a member of The Conway Artist Studio's and we're currently building our website.  We're based in the Conway Mill which is a lovely historic building undergoing gorgeous renovations.  The Mill is basically two huge old mills with a narrow gap between the two.  They are putting in a glass ceiling between them to create a beautiful courtyard, they've kept the old stone spiral staircase and our studio's have arched brick ceilings.  I love it there.

So these are the ideas I've come up with for the logo (we were originally going to be Conway Street Studios and it has now been decided as Conway Artist Studios)...

I love the idea of this basic shape, the past logo's for the Mill have been very conservative and 'vectory' and I think this is quite modern.

I love the idea of each artist taking the logo and transforming it into their own style and medium.  A simpler shape would be better for this type of thing.  We could each transform the logo and have it featured on the website for a month or two at a time.  We could also show 'how-to' and 'making-of' shots of how we worked our medium to produce the logo artwork.

We could run a competition this way too, to help gain fresh ideas, generate publicity and feature local community artists.  There's so much potential energy here, I'm so glad to be a part of this group!

Little Loulou loves rainbow drops...

Playing around with a new Loulou Dreaming.com logo.  I think I'll do this one in 3D paper for a website banner when I'm changing it next.  And there will be rainbow quilling and sculptural sunbeams and glittering stars... ooooh, 'little Loulou' loves it!

Zen-blobs...the current phase...

It's zen-blobs all the way lately for me with my zentangling.  This one I'm going to transform into letterpress and thermogocc cards...

Long shutter water shots...

In camera club we went up to Crawfordsburn Forest Park.  It was the most stunning, fairytale place I've ever been.  We were practicing long shots of moving water to get that misty water effect and I was sooooooooo tickled pink with my results...

Do what makes your heart sing!

I think this would make a lovely front of a card or reverse of a notecard.  It's my current zentangle phase this whole blob, sing thing...
